Within the DRC, bride pricing is known as la dot (the French word for dowry, although the repayment is manufactured out of the groom’s family members to the bride’s household) or biuma in Tshiluba, the language talked within the south-central area of the DRC, where we obtained our information. Although, historically, there is variation in wedding re re re payment traditions, today bride price is practised among all cultural teams in this the main DRC. Bride cost also functions as appropriate proof wedding, and a few aren’t considered married until a bride pricing is compensated in complete. Consequently, bride cost can also be necessary for inheritance and determining the lineage of any young kiddies regarding the wedding since, if a spouse dies, it permits a spouse to show which they had been formally hitched. Of the teams represented in Vansina (1966), roughly 80 percent practised some kind of re re re payment towards the bride’s household during the time of wedding. Nonetheless, there has existed great heterogeneity in how big is these transfers, that is mixed up in re payments, plus the terms under which bride cost needs to be paid back.
